How does football play calling work?

I just made my local jr college football team and never played in HS, my coaches don't know this and I'd like to keep it that way because this is the best jc team in the nation and everyone is amazing, anyways I play wide receiver and in the huddles the QB will say something like "trailer gut 24" I know that means 2 route and 4 route but how do I know which route I run? and theres 4 receivers on the field so are the ones opposite of me running the same route the QB only called 2 routes. I'm all confused and dont wanna look like the rookie out there, I'm sure I explained how he called the plays wrong too so help me out thanks.
