Why in Germany, Italy, Switzerland the houses stay on quite distance and in UK, France and Spain they huddled?

I can only speak for the UK, in most large citys the houses are close together because the of the number of people who live there, there are so many people who want to live in the city there is not much space, out in the countryside there is much more room.
