Is the Amazon Kindle worth buying?

I was thinking about buying a kindle for my birthday, and I was wondering what it was like. More opinions before I purchase one. And the books... what are the price ranges? If their expensive, then I won't bother with it but if the prices are reasonable, then I might consider one.
